Lorem Ipsum Generator

Set the number of paragraphs (3 by default, up to 50) and press Generate. Each paragraph is 40 to 69 words drawn at random from a fixed list of 63 Latin-looking words such as dolor, tempor and reprehenderit. The first word is capitalised and the paragraph ends with a single full stop.

Across 20,000 paragraphs generated with the same code, the average length was about 357 characters, including spaces. The default three paragraphs average about 1,070 characters and always fall between 120 and 207 words.

Paragraphs are separated by a blank line. The output is plain text with no <p> tags, so it pastes cleanly into design tools, word processors and CMS editors. If you need HTML, wrap each block in tags yourself.

Words are picked independently, so the familiar opening line is not reproduced and the same word can appear twice in a row. A typical paragraph starts something like this:

Deserunt incididunt ad consequat aliqua duis dolore consequat reprehenderit exercitation dolore ad minim duis veniam…

If a client or style guide expects the classic first sentence, type it at the start of the first paragraph. That line is widely recognised as placeholder text, so it is less likely to be mistaken for real copy.

There are no commas and no full stops inside a paragraph. That matters when you test a layout:

• Punctuation: real copy has short sentences, commas, quotes and dashes. This text has none of them, so it won't show how your typography handles them.
• Narrow columns: the longest words, reprehenderit and exercitation, are 13 and 12 letters. They are a decent test for cards and mobile widths, but product names and URLs in real content are often longer.
• Headings and buttons: generate one paragraph and copy the first few words. There's no separate mode for words or sentences.

The common failure is forgetting to replace it. Before launch, search your templates, CMS entries and translation files. Searching for lorem alone isn't enough with this tool: because words are drawn at random, a 40-word paragraph leaves it out about half the time. Search for several words, such as lorem, dolor, tempor and consequat.

Also check length assumptions. A mockup built around a 60-word paragraph may break when the real description is 15 words or 150. Where you can, design with a sample of the actual copy, and use lorem ipsum only to fill space.
