Tip Calculator

Work out the tip and total bill, and split it evenly between any number of people.

What the four results mean

Enter the bill, the tip percentage and how many people are paying. The calculator works out:

  • Tip amount: bill × tip ÷ 100
  • Total bill: the bill plus the tip
  • Per person: the total divided by the number of people
  • Tip per person: the tip divided by the number of people

With the defaults, $50 at 18% split two ways, the tip is $9, the total $59 and each person pays $29.5, which is $29.50. Amounts are shown to at most two decimal places, and a trailing zero is dropped.

Which number to type as the bill

The calculator tips on exactly the amount you enter, so the choice of number is yours, and it changes the result:

Bill enteredTip at 18%
$50.00 subtotal before tax$9.00
$54.50 total after tax$9.81
$60.00 meal price before a $10 voucher$10.80
$50.00 paid after the voucher$9.00

Check the receipt for a service charge before you start. If one has already been added, entering the full total tips on top of it.

Splitting when people ordered different amounts

The split is always even. If Ana's food came to $32 and Ben's to $18, an even split of the $59 total has Ben subsidizing Ana. Give each person their own share instead: multiply each subtotal by 1 + tip ÷ 100.

  • Ana: $32 × 1.18 = $37.76
  • Ben: $18 × 1.18 = $21.24

Together that is $59, the same total. You can also run the calculator once per person, with 1 in the split box.

Rounding the split so it adds up

Even splits rarely come out to whole cents. $59 between three people shows $19.67 each, but three payments of $19.67 come to $59.01. Either let one person pay $19.66, or round everyone up and leave the extra as tip.

Rounding up often lands on a cleaner tip. On a $50 bill for three people, a 20% tip makes the total $60 and the split exactly $20 each.

To leave a round total, work backwards. On a $62.50 bill, leaving $70 means a $7.50 tip, which is 12%. Type 12 in the tip box to confirm it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out what percentage I tipped?+

Divide the tip by the bill and multiply by 100. Leaving $10 on a $62.50 bill is a 16% tip. Compare like with like: if you normally tip on the amount before tax, divide by that amount, not the final total.

Can one person pay a smaller share?+

Yes. The split box accepts decimals, so count that person as a fraction. For two full shares and one half share of $59, enter 2.5: each full share is $23.60 and the half share is half of that, $11.80, which adds back up to $59.

Does the tip percentage have to be a whole number?+

No. You can type a value such as 17.5, and the tip and totals use it exactly. Only the display is rounded, to the nearest cent.
