What Percentage Is X of Y Calculator
Find out what percentage one number is of another.
Which number goes in which box
Put the part in This value and the total it belongs to in is what % of. The calculator divides the first by the second and multiplies by 100: part ÷ whole × 100. The defaults read "30 is what % of 200" and return 15.00%.
Order matters. Swap the boxes and the same two numbers say that 200 is 666.67% of 30. If a result looks far too big or too small, check you haven't entered them the wrong way round.
Everyday examples
| Question | Enter | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Test score of 43 out of 50 | 43, 50 | 86.00% |
| 7 months of a 12-month contract done | 7, 12 | 58.33% |
| $1,850 of a $2,400 budget spent | 1850, 2400 | 77.08% |
| 130 sales against a target of 100 | 130, 100 | 130.00% |
| 0.6 kg of a 0.75 kg bag used | 0.6, 0.75 | 80.00% |
Decimals work in both boxes, and a negative part gives a negative result: a loss of 12 on a base of 80 shows as −15.00%.
Don't average percentages that have different totals
Say you scored 9 out of 10 on one quiz (90%) and 30 out of 50 on a longer test (60%). The average of the two percentages is 75%, but that treats a 10-question quiz as equal to a 50-question test.
Add the parts and the wholes first: 39 correct out of 60 questions. Enter 39 and 60 and you get 65.00%, your real overall score. The same applies to conversion rates across campaigns, attendance across months, or any share built from groups of different sizes.
"What percent of" versus "what percent more than"
These questions sound alike but have different answers. 45 is 118.42% of 38, so it is 18.42% more than 38. Subtract 100 from this calculator's answer to get the difference. For a change between an old and a new value, the Percentage Increase / Decrease calculator gives it directly.
Dashes, rounding and totals that don't add up
- A dash means the whole is zero. A share of nothing can't be calculated.
- Two decimal places are always shown. One third displays as 33.33% and two thirds as 66.67%.
- Rounded shares may not add to 100. Three equal thirds show as 33.33% each, which adds to 99.99%. In a report, either say that figures are rounded or adjust the largest share so the column adds up to exactly 100%.
Frequently asked questions
How do I turn a fraction into a percentage?+
Put the top number in the first box and the bottom number in the second. 3/8 becomes 37.50%, and 2/3 becomes 66.67%.
What percentage of my income is my rent?+
Enter your monthly rent first and your monthly income second, using the same basis for both, either before tax or after. Rent of 1,400 on an income of 4,600 is 30.43%.
Can I find the total if I know the part and the percentage?+
Yes, by rearranging the formula: whole = part ÷ percentage × 100. If 30 is 15% of something, the whole is 30 ÷ 15 × 100 = 200. You can check it by entering 30 and 200 here.
