URL Slug Generator

Turn any title into a clean, SEO-friendly URL slug — lowercase, hyphenated and stripped of special characters.

What the generator keeps and what it throws away

Type or paste a title and the slug updates as you type. The rules are short:

  1. Everything becomes lowercase and outer spaces are trimmed.
  2. Any character that isn't a plain letter a–z, a digit, a space or a hyphen is deleted.
  3. Each run of spaces becomes one hyphen, repeated hyphens collapse to one, and hyphens at either end are removed.

So 10 Best Tips for Better SEO in 2026? becomes 10-best-tips-for-better-seo-in-2026, and 100% Cotton T-Shirts becomes 100-cotton-t-shirts. Hyphens you typed are kept, which is why "T-Shirts" stays as t-shirts.

Characters that vanish instead of being converted

Step 2 deletes characters; it doesn't translate them. That catches out titles with accents, symbols and code names:

Résumé Tipsrsum-tipsresume-tips
Rock & Roll Hall of Famerock-roll-hall-of-famerock-and-roll-hall-of-fame

user_id field guideuserid-field-guideuser-id-field-guide

The fix is to type the plain version before you generate: "Resume" instead of "Résumé", "and" instead of "&", a space instead of a dot or an underscore. Apostrophes simply disappear, so "It's" becomes its, which is usually what you want.

Titles in scripts other than Latin, such as Japanese, Hindi or Arabic, come out empty, because none of their letters are in a–z. Write a short English or transliterated version for the URL.

Shortening the slug yourself

The generator keeps every word, including "the", "for" and "in", and it doesn't shorten anything. Editing is your job. A useful test: would a reader understand the page from the slug alone?

Take 10-best-tips-for-better-seo-in-2026. Most of it can go:

  • The number "10" will be wrong as soon as you add an eleventh tip.
  • The year forces a URL change, or an out-of-date URL, when you update the article next year.
  • "best" and "better" add nothing a reader needs.

What's left, seo-tips, is short, stays accurate after updates and still says what the page is about.

Changing the slug of a page that is already live

A slug is part of the page address. Change it after the page is published and every existing link, bookmark and search result still points at the old address, which now returns a "not found" error.

If you do rename a live page, set up a permanent (301) redirect from the old path to the new one. The .htaccess Redirect Generator on this site writes those lines for Apache servers. Better still, settle the slug before you publish and leave it alone.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my slug come out empty?+

Your title had no characters from a to z or 0 to 9. That happens with titles written entirely in non-Latin scripts or made only of symbols. Type a Latin-letter version of the title and generate again.

Should a slug use hyphens or underscores?+

Hyphens. Google's own URL guidance recommends them as word separators, and this generator uses hyphens only. Any underscores in your title are deleted, so put a space where you want a break.

Does the slug keep capital letters?+

No, everything is lowercased. That avoids two addresses that differ only in case, which some servers treat as separate pages.
