PPF Calculator

Project your Public Provident Fund (PPF) maturity amount with annual compounding over a 15-year (or extended) horizon.

What the PPF calculator assumes

The calculator puts your full yearly deposit in at the start of each financial year and adds a full year's interest at the rate you enter, compounding once a year. With the default inputs (₹1,50,000 a year at 7.1% for 15 years):

  • Total deposited: ₹22,50,000
  • Maturity value: about ₹40,68,209
  • Interest earned: about ₹18,18,209

7.1% is the PPF rate for the October–December 2026 quarter, unchanged from the previous quarter. The government reviews it every quarter, while the calculator holds one rate for all 15 years, so treat the result as an estimate. To see the range, run a lower and a higher rate: at 6.5% the same deposits give about ₹38,63,102, and at 7.5% about ₹42,11,586.

Deposit timing: the 5th-of-the-month rule

PPF interest is worked out every month on the lowest balance between the close of the 5th day and the end of the month, and credited once a year at the end of the financial year. A deposit made on or before the 5th earns interest for that month; a deposit made on the 6th does not.

The calculator's result matches the best case: the full amount deposited by 5 April every year. Here is how other habits compare for ₹1,50,000 a year at 7.1% over 15 years:

When you depositValue after 15 yearsLess than the calculator shows
₹1,50,000 by 5 April₹40,68,209None
₹12,500 by the 5th of every month₹39,44,599About ₹1.24 lakh
₹1,50,000 between 1 and 5 March₹38,20,989About ₹2.47 lakh
₹1,50,000 after 5 March₹37,98,515About ₹2.70 lakh

In the first year alone, a lump deposit by 5 April earns ₹10,650 in interest, while monthly deposits of ₹12,500 earn about ₹5,769. If you save from salary each month, monthly deposits are fine; just pay before the 5th, not after. If you have the money in April, depositing it then is worth more than spreading it out.

15 years or an extension

PPF matures 15 years after the end of the financial year in which you opened it, and you can extend it indefinitely in 5-year blocks, with or without fresh deposits. If you want to keep depositing, you must ask for the extension within one year of maturity.

The calculator assumes you keep depositing every year, so set the period in 5-year steps to match the blocks:

Scenario (₹1,50,000 a year, 7.1%)Total depositedValue
15 years₹22,50,000₹40,68,209
20 years, deposits continue₹30,00,000₹66,58,288
25 years, deposits continue₹37,50,000₹1,03,08,015
30 years, deposits continue₹45,00,000₹1,54,50,911
20 years, no deposits after year 15₹22,50,000₹57,32,587
25 years, no deposits after year 15₹22,50,000₹80,77,891

For an extension without deposits, the PPF calculator cannot model it directly. Take the 15-year maturity value and grow it at the same rate with yearly compounding, which the lumpsum calculator does: ₹40,68,209 at 7.1% for 5 years gives about ₹57,32,587.

Planning around the ₹1.5 lakh limit

You can deposit a minimum of ₹500 and a maximum of ₹1,50,000 in a financial year, in multiples of ₹50. The calculator caps the yearly amount at ₹1,50,000 for that reason. Smaller amounts scale in proportion: ₹1,00,000 a year for 15 years at 7.1% gives about ₹27,12,139, and ₹50,000 a year about ₹13,56,070.

  • Tax deduction: deposits qualify under section 123 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (formerly 80C) only if you use the old regime. The ₹1.5 lakh deduction limit covers all your section 123 investments together, not PPF alone.
  • New regime: there is no deduction for the deposit, but the interest and maturity amount stay tax-free, so the calculator's figure is also your post-tax figure.
  • Keep the account active: deposit at least ₹500 every year, even in a tight year, so the account keeps running in good standing.

Frequently asked questions

How much will I get if I invest ₹1 lakh per year in PPF for 15 years?+

About ₹27,12,139 at 7.1%, if you deposit ₹1,00,000 by 5 April each year. You deposit ₹15,00,000 in total, so the interest is about ₹12,12,139, all tax-free.

What is the PPF interest rate for October–December 2026?+

7.1% a year, unchanged from the July–September 2026 quarter. The government announces small savings rates every quarter, so check again before the January–March 2027 quarter begins.

Can I deposit more than ₹1.5 lakh in PPF in a year?+

No. The maximum is ₹1,50,000 per financial year, in multiples of ₹50, so plan any extra savings in another product.

Can I withdraw money from PPF before 15 years?+

Partly. From the seventh financial year, you can make one withdrawal a year of up to 50% of the balance at the end of the fourth preceding year or the preceding year, whichever is lower. Full early closure is allowed only after 5 years and only on specified grounds, such as a life-threatening illness, higher education or a change of residency, with 1% less interest.
