JPG to PNG Converter

Convert JPG photos to lossless PNG format right in your browser.

Same pixels, bigger file

The converter decodes your JPG and saves the result as a lossless PNG at the same width and height. Lossless means the PNG keeps exactly what the JPG contained, including its compression artefacts: blocky patches in flat areas, faint ringing around edges. Converting doesn't repair them, and the picture won't look any sharper.

What you do get is a file that won't degrade further. Each time a JPG is edited and saved, it is compressed again and loses a little more. A PNG can be opened, edited and saved as often as you like without that loss.

Expect the PNG to be noticeably heavier than the JPG, especially for photos. The line shown after converting gives both sizes.

Sideways phone photos come out upright

Phones often store a photo in the sensor's orientation and add a tag that tells viewers to rotate it. When your browser decodes the JPG it applies that tag, and the canvas captures the already-rotated picture. The PNG is therefore saved the right way up and no longer depends on the tag. In a Chromium-based browser, a JPG tagged to rotate 90° came out with width and height swapped and no orientation tag in the new file.

When PNG is the better container for a JPG

  • You're going to edit it. Annotating a screenshot, adding text, or cropping in several rounds is cleaner on a PNG.
  • A form or tool demands PNG. Some upload fields, slide templates and design tools only take PNG.
  • You plan to cut out the background. PNG can hold transparency once an editor removes the background, while JPG can't.

If you just want to send a photo, there's no reason to convert. JPG is smaller and opens everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPG to PNG make the background transparent?+

No. A JPG has no transparency, so every pixel arrives in the PNG fully opaque, white backgrounds included. You'd need an editor to remove the background after converting.

Is a PNG higher quality than the JPG it came from?+

It's identical in what you see. PNG only stops further loss from this point on; it can't restore detail the JPG already discarded.

If I convert the PNG back to JPG later, do I lose more?+

Yes, a little. Saving as JPG compresses the image again. Converting back from the PNG is no worse than re-saving the original JPG once.

Does the PNG keep the date and location the photo was taken?+

No. The PNG is written from pixels alone, so camera details, GPS position and capture time are left out. Keep the original JPG if you need that information.
