PNG to WebP Converter
Convert PNG images to WebP for dramatically smaller file sizes on the web.
Transparency carries over
Unlike JPG, WebP has an alpha channel. Logos, icons, product cut-outs and interface graphics keep their see-through backgrounds when converted here. In a Chromium-based browser, an image that was half transparent came back with those pixels still fully transparent in the WebP. This is the main reason to pick WebP over JPG for a PNG.
The setting is 92%, and it is lossy
The tool asks your browser for a WebP at quality 0.92. That's a lossy setting: in a Chromium-based browser, a detailed test image came back with slightly shifted colour values after conversion. For photos and illustrations you won't normally see the change.
Where it can show:
- Pixel art and sprites, where every pixel has to be exact.
- Fine text and thin lines in screenshots, which can pick up a faint fuzz.
There's no lossless option or quality slider on this page, so for those images keep the PNG.
If your browser can't write WebP
The encoding is done by your browser, not by a server. Under the HTML canvas standard, a browser that doesn't support writing a requested format hands back a PNG instead. This tool doesn't check what it got back and names the download .webp either way.
If the result line shows almost no size change, or an image program reports the .webp file is really a PNG, run the conversion in a different, up-to-date browser.
Preparing images for a web page
Conversion keeps the original width and height, so a 3000-pixel-wide PNG stays 3000 pixels wide. If it will be shown at 1200 pixels, resize it first. The Image Resizer keeps PNG files as PNG, so you can resize without any loss and then convert the smaller PNG here. That gives one lossy step instead of two.
Compare the two sizes shown after converting. WebP often wins for photos and detailed artwork, but a tiny flat-colour icon may barely change.
How to use this tool
- 1Choose an image (JPG, PNG or WebP).
- 2Adjust the options if needed.
- 3Click Process & download.
Frequently asked questions
Is WebP always smaller than PNG?+
No. It depends on the image. Photographic and detailed images often shrink well, while very simple graphics may not. The result line after conversion shows both sizes, so you can keep whichever is smaller.
Can I get a lossless WebP from this tool?+
No. The quality is fixed at 0.92, which your browser treats as lossy. Keep the PNG when you need an exact copy.
What happens to an animated PNG?+
Only one frame survives. The image is drawn onto a canvas, which holds a single still picture, so the WebP is not animated.
Does the WebP keep the PNG's metadata?+
No. The WebP is encoded from the canvas pixels, so text chunks and other metadata in the PNG are not copied over.
