Cups to Milliliters Converter

This converter uses the US customary cup, 236.59 ml, which is exactly 16 US tablespoons or 8 US fluid ounces. That makes fractions land on slightly untidy numbers. Next to it are the 250 ml cup used in many metric kitchens and the rounded 240 ml cup some recipes use:

Type the fraction exactly as the recipe prints it. 1/3 gives 78.8627 ml and 3/4 gives 177.44 ml, with no need to turn them into decimals first.

For a single cup, the three definitions are within 13.41 ml of each other, about a tablespoon at most. That disappears in soups, stews and most sauces.

It matters more when a recipe uses several cups of liquid and the ratio is tight, as in bread dough or custard. Three cups is 709.76 ml here, 720 ml with 240 ml cups and 750 ml with 250 ml cups, a spread of about 40 ml. If a recipe comes from a US source, use the converter's result as it stands. If it comes from a kitchen that uses 250 ml cups, multiply by 250 instead. Don't use one number for both.

• Liquids: pour into a jug marked in ml and read at eye level. That is more accurate than estimating a cup line.
• Sticky liquids such as honey or syrup: measuring by ml in a jug leaves a lot behind on the sides. A light coating of oil helps it slide out.
• Mixed numbers: type them with a space, as in 2 1/2 (591.47 ml) or 1 1/4 (295.74 ml). For 1 1/3 cups the converter gives 315.45 ml, and 315 is as close as any jug can show.
• Dry ingredients: a cup of flour is a volume, and how hard it's packed changes how much it weighs. Converting to ml keeps that same uncertainty. If the recipe also lists grams, use the grams.
