Move the decimal point three places left

A liter is 1,000 milliliters, so this conversion is just a division by 1,000. You can do it without any arithmetic: move the decimal point three places to the left, adding zeros in front when you run out of digits.

  • 1500 ml β†’ 1.5 L
  • 375 ml β†’ 0.375 L
  • 5 ml β†’ 0.005 L (two zeros go in front)

The usual mistake is moving it two places, which gives 3.75 L for a 375 ml bottle. A quick sense check: anything that fits in one hand is well under 1 L.

Comparing prices across bottle sizes

Shelves mix 330 ml cans, 500 ml bottles and 1.5 L bottles, and the cheapest-looking one often isn't. Convert each size to liters, then divide the price by the liters:

PackLitersPricePrice per liter
330 ml can0.33$1.20$3.64
500 ml bottle0.5$1.50$3.00
1.5 L bottle1.5$2.50$1.67

The same trick works for a nutrition label given per 100 ml. Multiply the per-100 ml figure by 10 to get the amount per liter.

Engine sizes and other places ml hides

A cubic centimeter (cc) is the same volume as a milliliter. That is why a 1600 cc engine is described as a 1.6-liter engine, and a 250 cc motorbike engine is 0.25 L. Syringes and lab glassware often use cc or cmΒ³, and the conversion to liters is identical.

For water, a liter weighs close to a kilogram and a milliliter close to a gram. That is a handy check when a recipe or a parcel weight looks off. It does not hold for oil, milk or syrup, which are lighter or heavier than water.

What the tool shows for very small amounts

Results below 0.0001 L switch to scientific notation. Typing 0.05 ml gives 5.0000e-5, which means 5 Γ— 10⁻⁡ L, or 0.00005 L. Anything from 0.1 ml up displays as an ordinary decimal, so 0.1 ml shows as 0.0001.

If your source writes a comma as the decimal separator, as much of Europe does, you can type it that way: 1,5 ml and 1.5 ml both give 0.0015 L. Only a comma followed by exactly three digits counts as a thousands separator, so 1,500 ml means fifteen hundred milliliters and converts to 1.5 L.

How to use this tool

  1. 1Enter the value in milliliters.
  2. 2Read the converted result in liters instantly.
  3. 3Use the swap button to reverse the conversion, or pick any other unit.
