Centimeters to Feet Converter

Large household items sold in metric sizes are easier to picture in feet. Convert each side separately and turn the decimal into inches. A rug sold as 160 × 230 cm works out like this:

A 140 × 200 cm bed frame comes out at 4.5932 × 6.5617 ft, which is about 4 ft 7 in by 6 ft 6 3/4 in. Laying those numbers next to a tape measure on your floor tells you more than the decimals alone.

The digits after the decimal point are tenths and hundredths of a foot, not inches. To get inches, multiply the decimal part by 12:

The same slip makes 160 cm look like "5 foot 2" because the converter shows 5.2493. It is really 5 ft 3 in, a full inch more. Any time the decimal part is large, the error from misreading it grows: 0.9 ft is almost 11 inches, not 9.

Heights work the same way: 152 cm is 4.9869 ft, which is 4 ft 11.84 in, or just under 5 feet.

A foot is 30.48 cm, so dividing by 30 gives a quick estimate. It always runs 1.6% high. For short lengths that hardly matters: 90 cm comes out as 3 ft against an exact 2.9528 ft, about half an inch over.

For room-sized lengths the error is easier to notice. 300 cm divided by 30 gives 10 ft, but the exact answer is 9.8425 ft, nearly 2 inches less. That is enough to make a sofa that "should fit" stick out past a wall.

The fourth decimal place of a foot, the last one the converter shows, is worth about a thousandth of an inch. Round to the nearest inch for furniture and to the nearest half inch if you are cutting or fitting something.
