Metric sizes that look like inch sizes but aren't
Most people convert millimeters to inches when a part, tool or spec sheet is metric and the rest of the job is in inches. Several common metric sizes land close to a familiar fraction, which is exactly why they get mixed up:
| Metric size | In inches | Nearest fraction | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 mm | 0.23622 in | 1/4 in | 0.35 mm smaller |
| 8 mm | 0.31496 in | 5/16 in | 0.063 mm larger |
| 10 mm | 0.3937 in | 3/8 in | 0.475 mm larger |
| 13 mm | 0.51181 in | 1/2 in | 0.3 mm larger |
| 19 mm | 0.74803 in | 3/4 in | 0.05 mm smaller |
A gap of 0.05 mm, as with 19 mm and 3/4 in, rarely matters. A gap of a third of a millimeter or more can mean a bolt that wobbles in its hole, a wrench that rounds off a nut, or a dowel that won't go in.
Thousandths of an inch for fine work
Machinists, 3D-printing hobbyists and anyone reading a caliper often think in thousandths of an inch, called "thou" or "mils". To get them, multiply the inch result by 1,000:
- 1 mm = 0.03937 in = about 39.4 thou
- 0.1 mm = 0.003937 in = about 3.9 thou
- 0.05 mm = about 2 thou
For very small inputs the converter switches to scientific notation once the result drops below 0.0001 in. A value such as 0.002 mm shows as 7.8740e-5 in, which means 0.000078740 in. Below one inch it keeps five significant digits, so 7.5 mm reads 0.29528 in.
Estimating without a calculator
One inch is 25.4 mm, so dividing by 25 gets you close. Dividing by 25 is the same as multiplying by 4 and moving the decimal point two places left: 100 mm Γ 4 = 400, so roughly 4.00 in.
That shortcut always comes out 1.6% high. The true value for 100 mm is 3.937 in, about 1/16 inch less than the estimate. For sizing a phone case or a picture mount, that is often good enough to know what to look for. For anything that has to mate with another part, use the exact result and compare it with the fraction you need.
A frequent error is reading the metric size as if it were tenths of an inch. A 10 mm socket is not 1.0 in or 0.1 in; it is 0.3937 in, just over 3/8.

Frequently asked questions
How many millimeters are in an inch?+
25.4 exactly. Dividing a millimeter value by 25.4 gives inches, which is what the converter does, so 1 mm is about 0.03937 in.
Is 13 mm the same as 1/2 inch?+
No. Half an inch is 12.7 mm, so 13 mm is 0.3 mm bigger. A 13 mm wrench usually slips on a half-inch nut, but a half-inch wrench is too small for a 13 mm nut.
How do I find the nearest 1/64 inch for a millimeter value?+
Convert to inches, multiply by 64 and round to a whole number. 8 mm is 0.31496 in, and 0.31496 Γ 64 is 20.16, so the nearest mark is 20/64, which simplifies to 5/16 in.
How do I convert mm to inches for a screen or phone thickness?+
Type the millimeter figure as given and read the inch result. A device listed as 7.5 mm thick is 0.29528 in, a little under 5/16 in. For thin devices it is usually clearer to compare millimeters directly rather than converting.
