Reading a metric product listing in inches
Furniture, luggage and electronics sold internationally usually list their size as width Γ depth Γ height in centimeters. Convert each number on its own, then compare it with what you measured at home. A desk listed as 120 Γ 60 Γ 75 cm works out to:
| Side | Centimeters | Converter result | Nearest 1/8 inch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Width | 120 cm | 47.2441 in | 47 1/4 in |
| Depth | 60 cm | 23.622 in | 23 5/8 in |
| Height | 75 cm | 29.5276 in | 29 1/2 in |
If your alcove measures 47 inches across, this desk does not fit, even though "about 47 inches" sounds close enough. A quarter inch is the difference between sliding it in and scraping the wall.
Turning decimal inches into tape-measure fractions
A US tape measure is marked in fractions, not decimals, so 23.622 in is hard to find on it. To translate, take only the part after the decimal point, multiply it by 16, and round to a whole number. That gives sixteenths of an inch:
- 23.622 in: 0.622 Γ 16 = 9.95, which rounds to 10.
- 10/16 simplifies to 5/8, so you look for the 23 5/8 mark.
Use 8 instead of 16 for eighths, which is fine for most furniture and fabric. Use 32 only if you are doing fine woodwork.
A handy anchor for checking your work: 10 cm is 3.937 in, which is almost exactly 3 15/16 in, or one sixteenth short of 4 inches. That approximation is off by about 0.0005 in, so 50 cm is very close to five of them, 19 11/16 in.
How the result is rounded, and which way you should round
The converter shows four decimal places for results between 1 and 100 inches, two decimals from 100 inches up, and five significant digits below one inch, so 0.5 cm reads as 0.19685 in. That is far more precision than any household tool can show.
When you round for a fit check, round in the safe direction. Round the item you are buying up and the space you measured down. Rounding both to the nearest inch can hide a gap that isn't there.
The most common slip on this page is multiplying by 2.54 instead of dividing. That turns the 120 cm desk into "304.8 inches", which is over 25 feet. A quick sanity check catches it: the inch figure is always smaller than the centimeter figure, a bit under 40% of it.

Frequently asked questions
How many inches is 1 cm?+
1 cm is 0.3937 inches, a little under four tenths of an inch. Because one inch is exactly 2.54 cm, dividing any centimeter value by 2.54 gives the exact answer, and the converter does that division for you.
Is 2.5 cm the same as 1 inch?+
Not quite. 2.5 cm is 0.98425 inches, about 1.6% short of a full inch. That is fine for a rough guess but adds up quickly: treating every 2.5 cm as an inch makes a 60-inch measurement come out almost a full inch wrong.
Can I convert square centimeters to square inches with this tool?+
No. This converter handles lengths only. Convert each side to inches first and then multiply them. A 120 Γ 60 cm tabletop is 7,200 square centimeters, which is about 1,116 square inches, not the 2,835 you would get by dividing the area by 2.54 once.
Can I type 1,5 cm with a decimal comma?+
Yes. 1,5 and 1.5 both convert to 0.59055 inches. A comma followed by exactly three digits counts as a thousands separator instead, so 1,200 cm is read as twelve hundred centimeters and gives 472.44 inches.
