Fractions of a mile as meters

Directions and road signs in mile-based countries often give short distances as fractions: an exit in a quarter mile, a turn in half a mile. You can type the fraction just as the sign shows it, such as 1/4, or its decimal, 0.25. Then multiply the kilometer answer by 1,000 to picture it in meters:

DistanceDecimalKilometersAbout
1/10 mile0.10.16093 km160 m
1/4 mile0.250.40234 km400 m
1/2 mile0.50.80467 km800 m
3/4 mile0.751.207 km1.2 km

Mixed distances go in with a space between the whole miles and the fraction: 1 1/2 converts to 2.414 km. Leave out the word "mile" and any hyphen, as in 1-1/2, since the field can't read those and shows a note instead of a result.

Moving a mile-based training plan to a metric app

Running and cycling plans written in miles need converting if your watch or app is set to kilometers. Convert the weekly totals, not just the long run, so the whole plan stays in proportion. A 25-mile week becomes 40.2336 km, which you would log as 40.2.

Pace converts in the opposite direction from distance. A minute-per-mile pace becomes a shorter minute-per-kilometer pace, so you divide by 1.609344 rather than multiply. A 9:00 per mile pace is 540 seconds Γ· 1.609344 = 335.5 seconds, or about 5:36 per km. Entering 9 into this converter would give 14.4841, which is the distance in kilometers of 9 miles, not a pace.

Doing it in your head within a few meters

Multiplying by 1.6 is the familiar estimate and is 0.58% low. You can almost erase that error with one extra step: multiply by 1.6, then add 1% of the original miles. That is the same as multiplying by 1.61, which is only 0.04% high.

  • 40 miles: 64 + 0.4 = 64.4 km (exact 64.3738)
  • 250 miles: 400 + 2.5 = 402.5 km (exact 402.34)
  • 26 miles: 41.6 + 0.26 = 41.86 km (exact 41.8429)

On a 250-mile drive the plain 1.6 shortcut is 2.3 km short; the adjusted version is about 160 m long.

Frequently asked questions

How many km is 1 mile?+

One mile is exactly 1.609344 km, which the converter shows as 1.6093. That is a little over one and a half kilometers, or 1,609.344 meters.

What is 65 mph in km/h?+

65 mph is 104.61 km/h. Speeds per hour convert with the same factor as distances, so you can type the mph figure here and read the answer as km/h.

How should I round miles converted to kilometers?+

For driving, whole kilometers are enough. For walks and runs, one decimal place is the usual level of detail. Only keep more if you are matching a measured course or comparing logged distances from two devices.

Is a 5K longer than 3 miles?+

Slightly. 3 miles is 4.828 km, so a 5 km route is about 172 meters longer. If a plan says 3 miles and your app only offers a 5K preset, the preset is the longer of the two.
