Subtract 30 and halve: how far off it gets
The quick version people use for weather is to take away 30 and halve the rest. It's exact at 50 °F, and the error grows in both directions:

Between about 30 °F and 70 °F the error stays near a degree, which is fine for deciding what to wear. For a thermometer or an oven it's useless.
Getting the exact answer without a calculator
Subtract 32, halve the result, then add a ninth of that half. Halving and adding a ninth is the same as multiplying by 5/9, so nothing is lost.
- 350 °F: 350 − 32 = 318, half is 159, a ninth of 159 is 17.67, total 176.67 °C.
- 104 °F: 72, half is 36, plus 4 is 40 °C.
The 5/9 is also why so many results are long repeating decimals. 70 °F shows as 21.1111 °C; round to 21.1, or 21 for weather. Anything below 32 °F gives a negative Celsius result, so 0 °F is −17.7778 °C.
For a quick check of the exact method, try 212 °F: 180, then 90, plus 10 makes 100 °C.
Oven settings and thermometer readings
