Gym plates, kettlebells and bag allowances in pounds

Kilogram equipment rarely lands on a round pound figure. A 20 kg plate is 44.0925 lb, a 25 kg plate is 55.1156 lb, and a 32 kg kettlebell is 70.5479 lb. If you log lifts in pounds, convert the total on the bar once rather than each plate, so the small decimals don't pile up as rounding errors.

Baggage works the other way round: the limit is the fixed number. Say a ticket allows 23 kg and your luggage scale reads pounds. The converter gives 50.7063 lb, so treat 50 lb as your ceiling, not 51. Home scales and airport scales can disagree by a little, and a margin costs nothing.

For body weight, whole pounds are enough. 72.5 kg shows as 159.84 lb, which you would call 160 lb.

Double it and add a tenth: the mental version

Multiplying by 2.2 is easy without a calculator. Double the kilograms, then add a tenth of that doubled number.

  • 80 kg: double to 160, add 16, giving 176 lb. The converter says 176.37 lb.
  • 100 kg: 200 + 20 = 220 lb against 220.46 lb.

The shortcut always comes out about 0.21% low, so the gap grows with the weight: 0.37 lb at 80 kg and 0.46 lb at 100 kg. That is fine for a conversation about your weight. It is not fine for a weigh-in category or a postage band, where a fraction of a pound decides which side of the line you're on. Use the exact figure there.

Turning decimal pounds into pounds and ounces

The result is in decimal pounds, but birth weights, fish and parcels are often quoted in pounds and ounces. Split the result yourself:

  1. Keep the whole pounds. 3.4 kg converts to 7.4957 lb, so that's 7 lb.
  2. Multiply the decimal part by 16. 0.4957 Γ— 16 = 7.93 oz.
  3. Round to the nearest ounce: 7 lb 8 oz.

The classic mistake is reading 7.4957 lb as "7 lb 5 oz" because the digits after the point look like ounces. They are tenths and hundredths of a pound, not ounces, and the error here would be 3 oz.

Frequently asked questions

Is a kilogram exactly 2.2 pounds?+

No. A pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg, and the converter uses that figure, which makes 1 kg about 2.2046 lb. Rounding to 2.2 undercounts by roughly 0.2%, which is under half a pound for anything up to 100 kg.

Why do some results show four decimals and others only two?+

The display rounds by size. Results of 100 or more get two decimal places, results between 1 and 100 get four, and results under 1 get five significant digits. The copy button copies the rounded figure you see.

Can I type 72,5 with a decimal comma?+

Yes. 72,5 and 72.5 both convert to 159.84 lb. Thousands separators are understood as well, so a freight weight typed as 1,200 kg reads as twelve hundred and gives 2,645.55 lb.

How do I get stones and pounds instead of just pounds?+

Divide the pound result by 14. The whole number is stones and the remainder is pounds: 159.84 lb is 11 stone (154 lb) with 5.84 lb left over, so about 11 st 6 lb.
