Megahertz to Gigahertz Converter

Convert megahertz to gigahertz instantly and accurately. 1 MHz = 0.001 GHz. Type any value below β€” the result updates as you type.

How to convert megahertz to gigahertz

1 MHz = 0.001 GHz. To convert megahertz to gigahertz, multiply the value by 0.001.

Example: 10 MHz Γ— 0.001 = 0.01 GHz.

Going the other way, 1 GHz = 1000 MHz.

Clock speeds from BIOS screens and spec sheets

Firmware setup screens, monitoring tools and some spec sheets list processor and graphics clocks in megahertz, while product pages round them to gigahertz. One GHz is 1,000 MHz, so the conversion is a shift of the decimal point three places left:

  • 3600 MHz = 3.6 GHz
  • 4700 MHz = 4.7 GHz
  • 1600 MHz = 1.6 GHz
  • 800 MHz = 0.8 GHz

Odd values carry over exactly: 800.5 MHz is 0.8005 GHz. Results under 1 GHz keep five significant figures and results from 1 to 100 GHz keep four decimals, more than any clock reading needs.

Wi-Fi channels and radio bands

Router settings and wireless scanners usually list each channel's centre frequency in MHz, while marketing talks about the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Converting a channel list tells you which band each entry is in:

Listed (MHz)GHz
24122.412
24372.437
52005.2
58005.8

The same applies to radio and RF work generally, where component data sheets switch between MHz and GHz depending on the part.

Numbers that look like MHz but are not

Two common mix-ups produce wrong answers even when the arithmetic is right:

  • Memory speed. A memory module sold as 3200 is normally rated in megatransfers per second. Because this type of memory moves data twice per clock cycle, its actual clock is about half that figure. So 3200 does not mean a 3.2 GHz clock; the clock is closer to 1600 MHz, or 1.6 GHz.
  • Data rates. MHz is a frequency, not a speed in Mbps or MB/s. A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band says nothing on its own about how fast a connection is.

Similarly, a higher GHz figure means more cycles per second, not more work per cycle. Clock speed alone cannot rank two different processors.

Very small and very large inputs

Below 0.1 MHz the GHz answer drops under 0.0001 and is shown in scientific notation: 0.05 MHz becomes 5.0000e-5 GHz. For values that small, switch the To menu to kilohertz instead, where 1 MHz is 1000 kHz. At the other end, 1000000 MHz is 1000 GHz. There is no terahertz option, so very high frequencies stay in GHz.

How to use this tool

  1. 1Enter the value in megahertz.
  2. 2Read the converted result in gigahertz instantly.
  3. 3Use the swap button to reverse the conversion, or pick any other unit.

Frequently asked questions

How many MHz are in 1 GHz?+

1 GHz is 1,000 MHz, so 3.6 GHz is 3600 MHz. Use the swap button to convert in that direction.

What is 800 MHz in GHz?+

800 MHz is 0.8 GHz. Anything under 1000 MHz comes out below 1 GHz.

Does the lowercase mhz in my notes mean something different?+

Strictly, mHz with a small m means millihertz, a billion times smaller than megahertz. In everyday writing it almost always means megahertz, and this converter treats MHz that way.

Can I convert MHz to Hz?+

Yes. Set the To menu to Hertz. 100 MHz shows as 100000000 Hz, written without separators, so count the zeros.
