Decimal hours are not hours and minutes

The converter divides by 60 and gives the answer in decimal hours. 90 minutes is 1.5 hours, meaning one and a half hours, or 1 h 30 min. It does not mean 1 hour 50 minutes, and writing 1.50 when you mean 1:50 is an easy mistake to make on a timesheet.

These are the minute values that come up most, with their decimal equivalents as the converter shows them:

MinutesDecimal hours
60.1
120.2
150.25
200.33333
300.5
400.66667
450.75
500.83333

Multiples of 6 minutes give tidy tenths of an hour. Thirds of an hour never come out even.

Filling in a timesheet or an invoice

Payroll and billing multiply hours by a rate, so they need decimals. Convert the whole shift to minutes first, then to hours:

  1. 7 h 50 min is 7 Γ— 60 + 50 = 470 minutes.
  2. 470 minutes is 7.8333 hours.
  3. At $22 an hour, that's $172.33.

A week works the same way. 38 h 45 min is 2,325 minutes, which the converter turns into 38.75 hours.

Turning a decimal back into hours and minutes

The whole number is the hours. Multiply what's left after the decimal point by 60 to get the minutes: 2.25 hours is 2 hours plus 0.25 Γ— 60 = 15 minutes. Press the swap button and the converter does the whole thing in one step, showing 2.25 hours as 135 minutes.

Rounded decimals don't come back perfectly. 0.8333 Γ— 60 is 49.998, not 50, so round the result to the nearest minute.

What rounding to two decimals costs

One hundredth of an hour is 36 seconds, so rounding to two decimals moves each entry by at most 18 seconds. That sounds like nothing, but it shows up in pay. Rounding 7.8333 to 7.83 before multiplying by $22 gives $172.26, 7 cents less than the unrounded $172.33. Over many entries the cents add up, so multiply first and round the money, not the hours.

Rounding to the nearest quarter hour is far coarser: each entry can shift by up to 7.5 minutes.
