NOC Letter Generator

Generate a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for visas, higher studies, part-time work or property matters.

Common types of NOC

NOCIssued byUsually asked for when
Travel or visaEmployer (HR)You apply for a tourist or business visa and the embassy wants proof of employment and approved leave
PassportEmployer or government departmentYou apply for a passport; most often requested from government and PSU employees
Higher studiesEmployerYou join a part-time, distance or executive programme while working, or ask for study leave
Side business or second jobEmployerYour appointment letter requires approval for outside work
Tenant use of premisesLandlordA tenant wants to use the rented address for a business registration or a utility connection
Property transferHousing society or builderA flat is sold, transferred or let out
Loan closureBank or NBFCA loan is repaid and the lender's interest must be removed, for example from a vehicle's registration

All of them answer the same questions: who gives permission, to whom, for what, for which dates or property, and who can be contacted to verify it. The rest of this page covers the employer NOC for foreign travel, which is the one HR teams are asked for most.

What an employer NOC for travel should state

  • The employee's full name exactly as in the passport, and the passport number if the visa checklist asks for it.
  • Designation, employee ID and date of joining, so the letter also works as proof of employment.
  • Destination, purpose and travel dates: tourism, a family visit, a conference.
  • Approved leave for those dates and the date the employee will be back at work.
  • Who pays for the trip. If the company is not sponsoring it, say the employee bears the cost.
  • A named signatory with phone and email, so the embassy can verify the letter.
  • Reference number and date on company letterhead.

Leave salary out unless the visa checklist asks for it. When it does, many applicants attach a separate salary certificate rather than adding pay details to the NOC.

Sample: employer NOC for visa travel

The generator above produces a general-purpose NOC: the organisation has no objection to the person doing a stated thing, plus a no-liability line. The sample below is specific to foreign travel. It is addressed to the visa officer and confirms employment, approved leave, the return date and who pays, with a contact for verification. For studies or a side business, use the generator and describe the activity in the purpose field.

Mistakes that get an NOC questioned

  • Details that don't match the application. A name spelled differently from the passport, or leave dates that differ from the travel dates on the visa form.
  • An old letter. The receiving office decides how recent the NOC must be, so issue it close to the application date rather than reusing one from a previous trip.
  • The wrong signatory. A line manager's signature on plain paper carries less weight than HR or an authorised signatory on letterhead.
  • A vague purpose. "For personal reasons" doesn't tell the reader what the company has agreed to.
  • For landlord NOCs: missing the full property address, the owner's name as on the ownership document, and the exact use being permitted.

Frequently asked questions

Do private-sector employees need an NOC for a passport?+

It depends on the current document list for your category of applicant, which the passport authority sets, not your employer. Government and PSU employees are the group most often asked for an employer NOC or identity certificate. Check the latest checklist on the official Passport Seva portal before you apply.

How long is an NOC valid?+

An NOC has no fixed validity unless it states one. The office receiving it decides how recent it must be. If the permission is for a specific trip or course, write the dates in the letter so it is clear what period it covers.

Can my employer refuse an NOC for higher studies or a side business?+

Yes, an employer can decline, especially if your appointment letter requires approval for outside work or if the course timings clash with your shifts. Explain how the studies or business fit around your working hours, and ask for the decision in writing either way.

Is an NOC the same as an employment certificate?+

No. An employment certificate only confirms that you work at the company, in a stated role, since a stated date. An NOC adds the employer's permission for a specific activity. Some embassies accept a combined letter, which is why the sample above includes both.
