Split PDF — Extract Pages

Extract specific pages or page ranges from a PDF into a new file. Type ranges like “1-3, 5, 8-10” and download instantly.

One run, one new file

Despite the name, this tool doesn't chop a PDF into many files at once. Each run takes the pages you list and saves them as a single new PDF called extracted-pages.pdf. To split a document into parts, run it once per part.

After you pick a file, the tool tells you how many pages it has. Say it's 20 pages and you want two halves:

  1. Type 1-10 and download. Rename the file to something like part-1.pdf.
  2. Type 11-20 and download again, then rename that one too.

Most browsers add a number to the second extracted-pages.pdf, so renaming as you go saves confusion later. The original file is never changed.

How the page box reads what you type

Separate entries with commas. An entry is either a single page number or two numbers joined by a hyphen. Spaces are ignored. Results below are for a 10-page PDF unless stated.

You typePages you get
1-3, 5, 8-101, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 10
8-1008, 9, 10 (the range is cut at the last page)
2, 2, 1-31, 2, 3 (repeats are dropped)
0, 11nothing (both are outside the document)
5-3nothing (backwards ranges don't count)
3- or 1;4nothing (open ranges and semicolons aren't understood)

If nothing valid is left, you get the error No valid pages in that range. The box starts filled with 1-3, so change it before you run.

Splitting by chapter

The split file doesn't keep the original's bookmarks, so look up the chapter start pages before you start. Open the PDF in your usual viewer, click through the bookmarks, and note the page number where each chapter begins. Count from the first page of the file, not from the number printed in the footer. Front matter such as a title page and contents often makes those two differ.

With chapters starting on pages 1, 9 and 23 of a 40-page file, the three runs are 1-8, 9-22 and 23-40.

How to use this tool

  1. 1Choose your file(s).
  2. 2Set the options (pages, rotation, order).
  3. 3Click Process & download — the result downloads instantly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I split every page into a separate PDF?+

Only by running the tool once per page, typing 1, then 2, then 3 and so on. There's no automatic one-file-per-page option.

Does splitting change or shrink the original PDF?+

No. Your original stays exactly as it was; the tool builds a new file from copies of the pages.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?+

Not reliably. The tool can't decrypt PDFs, so pages from a protected file may come out blank or unreadable. Remove the password first with software you trust.

Do links and comments survive the split?+

Comments and web links that sit on a copied page come along with it. Bookmarks and fillable form behaviour don't.
