Grams to Ounces Converter

This converter's ounce is the ordinary weight ounce, the one with 16 to the pound and 28.3495 g each. Two other units share the name, and mixing them up is the most common mistake on this conversion.

• Fluid ounce. A measure of volume, used on drink labels and liquid measuring cups. A fluid ounce of water weighs about 29.57 g, or 1.0432 weight ounces, so the two happen to be close for water. For honey, oil or flour they come apart, because those are heavier or lighter than water for the same volume.
• Troy ounce. Used for gold, silver and other precious metals. It is a different unit and isn't offered here, so don't price metal from a grams-to-ounces result.

A 250 g block of butter is 8.8185 oz, and 125 g is 4.4092 oz. A 454 g pack is 16.0144 oz, a hair over a pound.

Small kitchen amounts produce awkward figures. An 18 g coffee dose is 0.63493 oz, which most scales can't display in ounces anyway. If your scale reads grams, keep the recipe in grams and convert only what you need to share.

Postage is where precision counts. If a rate table steps up at every whole ounce, an 85 g letter (2.9983 oz) falls under 3 oz, but an 86 g letter (3.0336 oz) is over. A single gram moves it into the next band, so weigh the sealed envelope, not the contents.

Dividing by 30 is the easiest but loses about half an ounce on a block of butter. For baking, where a few percent of flour changes the texture, use the converter or keep the grams.
