Typing half and quarter ounces
Recipes and packs written in ounces lean on fractions, and the input accepts them with a slash. Put a space between the whole ounces and the fraction for mixed amounts:
- Β½ oz β type 1/2 β 14.1748 g
- ΒΌ oz β type 1/4 β 7.0874 g
- ΒΎ oz β type 3/4 β 21.2621 g
- 1Β½ oz β type 1 1/2 β 42.5243 g
Decimals give the same answers, so 0.5 and 1/2 are interchangeable. The one thing the field can't read is a pasted Β½ or ΒΎ character, which some recipe sites use. It shows a note that the number couldn't be read; retype the fraction with a slash.
Label weights and what to expect on your scale
Common pack sizes in ounces convert like this:
| Label | Grams |
|---|---|
| 4 oz | 113.4 g |
| 6 oz | 170.1 g |
| 8 oz | 226.8 g |
| 12 oz | 340.19 g |
| 16 oz | 453.59 g |
A kitchen scale shows whole grams, so round to the nearest gram: 113 g for a 4 oz portion, 227 g for 8 oz. Don't be surprised if a pack labelled in both units prints a slightly different gram figure; labels are rounded too.
For a weight in pounds and ounces, turn it all into ounces first. 1 lb 4 oz is 16 + 4 = 20 oz, which is 566.99 g.
Multiplying by 28, 30 or 28.5 in your head
The quick multipliers, checked on 8 oz (226.8 g):
- Γ 28 gives 224 g, about 1.23% low.
- Γ 30 gives 240 g, about 5.8% high. That's 13 g of extra sugar in a recipe asking for 8 oz.
- Γ 30, then take off 5% (the same as Γ 28.5) gives 228 g, only 0.53% high.
For portioning meat or cheese, Γ 28 is plenty. For baking, use the converter: small errors in flour, sugar or butter add up across a recipe.
If you convert a whole recipe, convert each ingredient from the original ounces rather than rounding one result and scaling the rest from it.

Frequently asked questions
Is this the ounce marked on a measuring jug?+
No. Measuring jugs and drink labels use fluid ounces, which measure volume. This page converts weight ounces, so use the oz to ml converter for liquids. Only for water and similar liquids are the gram and millilitre figures close, at roughly 29.6 per fluid ounce.
Can I use this for gold or silver?+
No. Precious metals are weighed in troy ounces, a separate unit this converter doesn't include. Using a regular ounce for metal gives the wrong gram weight and the wrong value.
How many ounces is 100 grams?+
3.5274 oz. Press the swap button to convert any gram amount into ounces with the same box.
How many grams is a quarter pound?+
A quarter pound is 4 oz, which converts to 113.4 g. A half pound is 8 oz, or 226.8 g.
