Kilograms to Grams Converter

Most kitchen scales read in grams, while bulk food is sold by the kilogram. Converting first makes portioning straightforward. A 1.5 kg bag of rice is 1500 g, which divides into six 250 g portions. A recipe calling for 0.125 kg of sugar wants 125 g.

Without the converter, multiply by 1,000 by moving the decimal point three places right: 0.75 kg is 750 g, 2.5 kg is 2500 g, 0.454 kg is 454 g. When the number runs out of digits, add zeros. That's how 1.5 becomes 1500 and not 150.

Shelf labels quote unit prices in different ways, and grams help you compare them. A price per kilogram divided by 10 is the price per 100 g, and divided by 1,000 it's the price per gram.

• Loose cheese at 12.50 per kg costs 1.25 per 100 g.
• A 400 g pack at 5.20 works out to 5.20 ÷ 0.4 = 13.00 per kg.

So the loose cheese is cheaper, even though the pack has the lower sticker price. Convert the pack size to kilograms (400 g is 0.4 kg) and divide; that puts every product on the same scale.

A dot or a comma works as the decimal mark, so 1,5 and 1.5 both come back as 1500 g. The exception is a comma followed by exactly three digits, which is read as a thousands separator: 1,500 means fifteen hundred kilograms. If a label writes one and a half kilos as 1,500 kg, type 1,5 instead.

Small amounts are no problem. 0.0005 kg converts to 0.5 g, and 0.00005 kg to 0.05 g, which is more precision than a kitchen scale offers. Leave the unit off, though. Typing 2.5kg brings up a note that the number couldn't be read; the menu already says kilograms.

Some packs list weights like 0.454 kg or 0.907 kg. Converted, those are 454 g and 907 g, and they look strange because they were sized in pounds first: 454 g is 1.0009 lb and 907 g is 1.9996 lb. Knowing this helps when a recipe from another country asks for "a pound of butter" and your pack says 454 g. They are the same amount, give or take a gram, so you don't need to weigh anything out.
