Converting a stones-and-pounds weight
Weights in stone are usually spoken as two numbers, like 11 st 4 lb. The converter takes one number, so you have two options:
- Convert the stones only, then add the pounds. 11 st is 154 lb; add the 4 lb to get 158 lb.
- Turn the loose pounds into a fraction of a stone. 4 lb is 4/14 of a stone, so type the mixed number
11 4/14, with a space after the stones. That also comes back as exactly 158 lb.
Avoid typing a rounded decimal such as 11.29 instead, which lands on 158.06 lb.
The fraction pays off if you need kilograms in the end. Leave 11 4/14 in the box and switch the To menu to kilograms: it shows 71.6676 kg, the same as converting 158 lb on the pounds-to-kilograms page. Converting the stones and the pounds separately and adding the results works too, but it's easier to make an arithmetic slip.
11.4 stone is not 11 stone 4 pounds
The digits after a decimal point are tenths of a stone, and each tenth is 1.4 lb. So 11.4 st converts to 159.6 lb, while 11 st 4 lb is 158 lb, a difference of 1.6 lb. Scales and apps that show decimal stone make this mistake easy, because the reading looks like stones and pounds.
| Decimal part | Pounds |
|---|---|
| 0.1 st | 1.4 lb |
| 0.25 st | 3.5 lb |
| 0.5 st | 7 lb |
| 0.75 st | 10.5 lb |
Multiplying by 14 without a calculator
Split the 14 into 10 and 4. For 12 stone: 12 Γ 10 = 120, 12 Γ 4 = 48, total 168 lb. For 9 stone: 90 + 36 = 126 lb.
Going back from pounds to stones, divide by 14 and keep the remainder as pounds. 158 lb is 11 Γ 14 = 154 with 4 left over, so 11 st 4 lb. The converter gives 11.2857 st for the same input, which is the same weight written as a decimal.
Because 14 is a whole number, these methods are exact, not estimates.

Frequently asked questions
Is a stone exactly 14 pounds?+
Yes, exactly. The converter defines the stone as 14 pounds of 0.45359237 kg each, so the ratio has no leftover fraction at any size: 1000 st shows as 14000 lb.
Should I write 12 stone or 12 stones?+
For a weight, stone usually stays singular, as in "she weighs 9 stone 2". That's why this converter labels the unit Stone in both singular and plural.
How do I convert stone to kilograms?+
Pick kilograms in the To list. 11 st is 69.8532 kg. For stones and pounds, convert the whole thing to pounds first, then switch the From box to pounds.
What is 10 stone 7 pounds in pounds?+
147 lb. 10 st is 140 lb, plus 7 lb. Because 7 lb is half a stone, typing 10.5 gives the same answer.
