Picturing a hectare
A hectare is a square 100 m on each side: 10,000 m². The tool converts it at 1 ha = 2.4711 acres, so a hectare is roughly two and a half acres.
The 100 m side is easy to picture: it is the length of a 100 m sprint. An acre has no tidy side length, so when you need to pace out or sketch an area, the hectare is the simpler unit to hold in your head. In square feet, a hectare is 107,639.1 ft².
Because it is a square, the side length is a poor guide to size. Halve the side to 50 m and you keep only a quarter of the area: 0.25 ha, or 0.61776 acres. A plot described as "half as long and half as wide" is not half the land.
Farms, plots and land listings
In metric countries, farmland, forestry and land sales are usually quoted in hectares. Converted at the tool's factor:
| Hectares | Acres |
|---|---|
| 0.5 | 1.2355 |
| 2 | 4.9421 |
| 10 | 24.7105 |
| 40 | 98.8422 |
| 100 | 247.11 |
| 1,000 | 2,471.05 |
100 hectares are 1 km², so 1 km² is also 247.11 acres. That helps with maps and satellite views, where areas are often given in square kilometers.
Mental math: times 2.5, then trim
Multiplying by 2.5 is the easy shortcut, and it runs 1.17% high. 40 ha × 2.5 = 100 acres against the real 98.8422. For a quick sense of size that is fine. For a sale or a grant application it is not, because 1.17% of a large holding is a lot of land.
Multiplying by 2.47 is only 0.04% low. 40 ha × 2.47 = 98.8 acres.
The result box shows 4 decimals up to 100 acres and 2 decimals above that, so 1,000 ha reads 2,471.05. Survey figures and title documents may carry more digits; copy those rather than the rounded display.
Converting price and yield, not just area
Anything quoted per hectare goes the other way. An acre is smaller, so each acre gets a smaller share of a per-hectare figure. Divide by 2.4711, or multiply by 0.40469:
- Land at 25,000 per hectare is 10,117.14 per acre.
- A crop yield of 8 tonnes per hectare is about 3.2375 tonnes per acre.
- A fertiliser rate per hectare also shrinks to about 40% per acre.
Multiplying a per-hectare figure by 2.4711 is the classic slip. It inflates a per-acre price by more than six times.
