Where 10.7639 comes from

A meter is about 3.2808 feet. A square meter is a square with 1 m sides, so it holds 3.2808 × 3.2808 square feet, which the tool gives as 10.7639 ft². Using the plain length factor would leave you with a figure about three times too small: 20 m² × 3.2808 is 65.6 ft², when the room is really 215.28 ft².

A quick sanity check: each side of a square meter is a bit over 3 ft, and 3 × 3 is already 9. Any answer near 3 ft² per m² has skipped the squaring.

Buying flooring sold by the square foot

Flooring and tiles are often priced and boxed in square feet, while metric room plans are in square meters. Work through it in this order:

  1. Convert the room area. A 4 × 5 m room is 20 m², or 215.28 ft².
  2. Add a waste allowance if you use one. With 10% extra, 215.28 becomes 236.81 ft².
  3. Divide by the coverage per box. At 22 ft² a box, that is 10.76 boxes.
  4. Round up. Buy 11 boxes, because a box short means a second trip and possibly a different batch.

Paint coverage quoted in square feet per gallon

When a paint label quotes coverage in square feet per gallon and your walls are measured in square meters, the simplest route is to convert the walls. 40 m² of wall is 430.56 ft². At a label figure of 350 ft² per gallon, one coat needs 1.2302 gallons.

If you would rather keep everything metric, convert the label once: 350 ft² per gallon is 8.5898 m² per liter. Then 40 m² ÷ 8.5898 = 4.6567 liters per coat, the same amount of paint.

Multiplying in your head

  • × 10 is easy but 7.10% low. A 50 m² flat becomes 500 ft² instead of 538.2.
  • × 11 is 2.19% high, which is the safer side to err on when you are buying material.
  • × 10.75 is only 0.13% low if you can manage the arithmetic.

Results of 100 ft² and up are shown to 2 decimals. No tape measure is that precise, so round to the nearest whole square foot.
