Moving the decimal point one place left

There are 10 millimeters in a centimeter, so converting is a matter of shifting the decimal point one place to the left. No rounding is ever involved:

  • 45 mm becomes 4.5 cm
  • 7.5 mm becomes 0.75 cm
  • 250 mm becomes 25 cm
  • 0.5 mm becomes 0.05 cm

A quick check that you moved it the right way: the centimeter number is always the smaller one. If 45 mm turned into 450, you multiplied instead of divided, and the answer is a hundred times too big.

The converter does the same shift. It also hides the tiny floating-point leftovers a computer sometimes produces, so 0.3 mm shows as a clean 0.03 cm.

Reading millimeters off a centimeter ruler

On a metric ruler the numbered lines are centimeters and the small ticks between them are millimeters. That makes the conversion visible: a measurement that ends four small ticks past the 6 is 64 mm, or 6.4 cm.

The middle tick, usually a little longer, marks half a centimeter. A screw listed as 16 mm long reaches the 1 and goes six ticks further, which is 1.6 cm.

Because each tick is exactly one tenth of a centimeter, you never need more than one decimal place in centimeters for anything you can measure with a ruler. If a spec gives 0.25 mm, that level of detail belongs to calipers, and centimeters stop being a convenient unit.

When to keep millimeters instead

Converting to centimeters makes a number easier to picture, but it is not always the better unit to write down. Technical drawings, hardware and many product spec sheets stay in millimeters precisely to avoid decimals: 85 mm is cleaner on a cutting list than 8.5 cm.

Switch to centimeters when you are comparing with something already given in centimeters, such as clothing measurements or a box size, and keep millimeters when you are ordering parts or reading a drawing. Mixing the two on one list is a common way to cut a piece ten times too short.

Frequently asked questions

How many millimeters are in a centimeter?+

Ten. So 1 mm is 0.1 cm, and any millimeter figure divided by 10 gives centimeters.

Is 5 mm the same as half a centimeter?+

Yes. 5 mm is exactly 0.5 cm. On most rulers it is the slightly longer tick halfway between two numbered lines.

How do I convert mm to meters instead?+

Divide by 1,000, which moves the decimal point three places left. 1,500 mm is 1.5 m. You can also pick meters in the converter's To menu.

Is 25 mm of rain the same as 2.5 cm?+

Yes. Rainfall depth converts like any other length, so 25 mm of rain is 2.5 cm. Millimeters are handier for rain because small amounts such as 0.4 mm read more naturally than 0.04 cm.
