Capitalize Each Word Tool

Capitalize the first letter of every word in your text.

It only touches the first letter

The tool raises the first letter of every word and leaves every other letter as you typed it. It never lowercases anything. That makes it different from a title-case tool:

InputOutput
the quick brown foxThe Quick Brown Fox
ALL CAPS STAYSALL CAPS STAYS
iPhoneIPhone
new york city, 5th avenueNew York City, 5th Avenue

So if your text is in capitals, lowercase it first. And every small word gets a capital too: "of", "the" and "and" all become "Of", "The" and "And". If you want those left small for a headline, use the Title Case Converter instead.

Hyphens, apostrophes and numbers

A new word starts after any character that isn't a plain letter, digit or underscore. That gives mixed results with punctuation inside words:

  • Hyphens work as you'd expect. jean-luc becomes Jean-Luc and e-mail becomes E-Mail.
  • Apostrophes split words. o'neil correctly becomes O'Neil, but don't becomes Don'T and mcdonald's becomes Mcdonald'S.
  • Numbers block the capital. In 3rd the first character is a digit, so nothing changes.
  • Dots split words. u.s.s. becomes U.S.S.
  • Underscores don't split words. hello_world becomes Hello_world.

Read through any contractions and possessives after converting, since those are the ones most likely to need a fix.

Accented letters need checking

The word detection only recognises the unaccented letters A to Z. An accented letter at the start of a word is not raised, and the letter after it is treated as the start of a new word:

  • élan becomes éLan
  • über becomes üBer
  • straße becomes StraßE

Accents in the middle of a word are fine as long as nothing follows them: café becomes Café. For French, German, Spanish or other text with many accented letters, check the output carefully or fix those words by hand.

Where it's useful

  • Names, cities and street addresses typed in lowercase, for a mailing list or form export.
  • Product names and menu items where every word should start with a capital.
  • Column headers you want to read more easily before tidying them up.

Lines and spacing are left exactly as they were, so you can paste a whole list and every line is converted on its own.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between this and title case?+

This tool capitalises every word, including short ones like a, of and the, and never lowercases the rest of a word. Title case follows style rules that keep minor words small and usually lowercases the other letters, which suits headlines better.

How do I fix text that is already in capitals?+

Convert it to lowercase first with the Uppercase to Lowercase Converter, then paste the lowercase text here. Otherwise the capitals you already have are kept as they are.

Why does Don't become Don'T?+

The apostrophe ends one word and starts another as far as the tool is concerned, so the t is treated as a new word. Correct contractions and possessives by hand after converting.
