Uppercase to Lowercase Converter
Convert text to lowercase instantly. Also switch to UPPERCASE, Title Case or Sentence case.
Every letter goes small, nothing else changes
This page does one conversion: it lowercases every letter in the box and leaves digits, spaces, punctuation, symbols and emoji exactly where they were. The output has the same number of characters as the input in almost every case, so line lengths and layout stay intact.
Typed with caps lock on, WELCOME TO THE USA, MR. O’BRIEN comes out as welcome to the usa, mr. o’brien. Notice what went with the capitals: the sentence start, the acronym and both names. Lowercase is a clean starting point, not a finished sentence.
Where all-lowercase is the right result
Some text is meant to be lowercase from start to finish. The tool is quickest for these:
- Email addresses and domains.
John.Smith@Example.COMbecomesjohn.smith@example.com. Domain names ignore case, so the part after the @ is always safe to lowercase, and in practice the name before the @ is rarely case-sensitive either. - Lists you plan to deduplicate.
Apple,APPLEandapplelook like three entries to a strict comparison. Lowercase them first and a duplicate remover sees one. - Tags, hashtags and keywords where you want a consistent style.
- File names and URL slugs, which on many servers are case-sensitive, so mixing cases creates two different addresses.
Accented letters, Greek and Turkish
Lowercasing follows Unicode's standard case rules, not just the English alphabet:
- Accented capitals convert:
ÀÉÎÕÜbecomesàéîõü. - Greek gets the right sigma for its position.
ΟΔΟΣ ΣΟΦΙΑΣbecomesοδος σοφιας, with the word-final form ς at the end of each word and σ at the start. - Turkish is the exception. The conversion isn't language-aware, so the dotted capital
İbecomesifollowed by a separate combining dot.İzmir(5 characters) comes out as 6 characters, and the extra dot may show up in some fonts. Check Turkish text by eye.
Getting readable text back after lowercasing
Lowercasing throws away information you can't recover automatically. If the text is prose, run it through the Sentence Case Converter next to restore capitals at the start of each sentence, then fix names, places and acronyms such as USA or PDF by hand.
Keep a copy of the original before converting anything with lots of proper nouns, such as an address list or a bibliography. Retyping capitals in fifty names takes longer than fixing a few shouted words.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work for Cyrillic and other alphabets?+
Yes, for any script that has capital and small letters, such as Cyrillic, Greek and Armenian. ПРИВЕТ becomes привет. Writing systems that have no capitals, like Chinese or Devanagari, are left exactly as typed.
Does lowercasing change numbers or symbols?+
No. Only letters that have a lowercase form are changed. Digits, currency signs, punctuation, emoji and spacing come through untouched.
Can lowercase text be turned back into the original?+
Not automatically. Once a letter is lowercase, nothing records whether it used to be a capital, so an uppercase converter would give you all capitals rather than the original mix.
