Reverse Text Generator

Reverse your text backwards character by character — or flip the order of words or lines.

Character-by-character reversal, line breaks included

The tool takes your whole text and writes it out from the last character to the first. Hello, world becomes dlrow ,olleH, with the comma and space moving along with the letters.

The text is treated as one long string, so line breaks are reversed too. Two lines, line one then line two, come back as owt enil then eno enil: the last line is now on top and each line reads backwards.

The page doesn't have separate modes for reversing word order or line order. To flip only the order of lines and keep each line readable, use the Reverse List tool instead.

Checking palindromes and making word puzzles

Reversed text is handy for spotting palindromes and reversal pairs. stressed becomes desserts, a different word. level and racecar come back unchanged, so they are palindromes.

Sentence palindromes need one extra step, because spaces and punctuation move too. A man, a plan, a canal: Panama reverses to amanaP :lanac a ,nalp a ,nam A, which doesn't look identical. Remove the spaces and punctuation and ignore case before comparing, and both read amanaplanacanalpanama.

Emoji, flags and accents can break

The engine reverses Unicode code points, not the symbols you see. Most letters and simple emoji are one code point, so they survive. Anything built from several code points gets its parts swapped:

  • Flags are made of two letter symbols, and reversing them can produce a different country. 🇮🇳 (I + N, India) turns into 🇳🇮 (N + I, Nicaragua).
  • Skin tones are a separate modifier after the emoji. ok 👍🏽 comes back as the colour swatch followed by a plain yellow thumb, then ko.
  • Family and multi-person emoji are joined by invisible joiners. Their order flips, and the result may show as separate people instead of one group.
  • Decomposed accents: if an accent is stored as a mark after its letter, reversing moves it onto the neighbouring letter. noël stored this way becomes l̈eon, with the dots over the l.

Letters with precomposed accents, which is how most keyboards type them, stay intact.

Backwards is not the same as mirrored

The characters keep their normal shapes. Reversed text reads right to left, but each letter still faces the usual way, so holding the screen up to a mirror won't make it readable. Mirror writing and upside-down text use substitute characters, which this tool doesn't produce. Running the output through the tool a second time gives you back your original text exactly, as long as nothing was edited in between.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reverse the order of words but keep each word readable?+

Not on this page, which reverses individual characters. Break the sentence so that every word sits on a separate line, run it through the reverse list tool, then join the lines back together with the remove line breaks tool.

Is reversed text a safe way to hide a message?+

No. Anyone can reverse it back in seconds, and it reads easily even by eye. Treat it as a puzzle or a novelty, not as a way to keep something private.

Does reversing work with right-to-left languages like Arabic or Hebrew?+

It reverses the stored characters just the same, and the result is still displayed right to left, so each word reads backwards in its usual direction. Arabic letters can also change shape when their neighbours change, so the reversed text may look quite different from the original.
