Count characters with and without spaces — perfect for tweets, meta descriptions, SMS and form limits.
Two character totals and when to use each
The counter shows two figures side by side:
- Characters counts everything in the box: letters, digits, punctuation, spaces, tabs and line breaks. Each line break counts as 1. Use this one for anything with a hard limit, such as a form field, an ad headline or a text message.
- Chars (no spaces) removes every kind of whitespace first, including tabs, line breaks and non-breaking spaces. Use it when a brief asks for characters “excluding spaces”.
Spaces at the start or end of your text count in the first total. If a field rejects text that looks short enough, check for a trailing space or an empty line at the bottom.
Why an emoji counts as 2 or more
The counter measures text the way JavaScript stores it, in units called UTF-16 code units. Ordinary letters, accented letters such as é, and the common Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters take 1 unit each. Emoji and some rarer symbols take 2 or more, and that is what the counter reports:

Accents can do the same thing out of sight. Café typed on most keyboards is 4 characters, but the same word pasted from some sources stores the accent as a separate mark and counts as 5. Both look identical.
Styled letters from the bold and italic generators on this site count as 2 each, so a 10-letter bold name is 20 characters here. Bubble and small-caps letters count as 1.
A worked example: a short promo message
Say you are writing this two-line message:
Free shipping on orders over $50 🚚
Ends Sunday.
- First line, without the emoji: 33 characters, including the space before 🚚.
- The truck emoji: 2.
- The line break: 1.
Ends Sunday.: 12.
The counter shows 48 characters, and 40 with no spaces (7 spaces and 1 line break removed). Replace the line break with a space and the total stays 48. Drop the emoji and its space and it falls to 45.
Matching the way a platform counts
Many platforms publish a character limit but count in their own way. Some treat an emoji as 1, some shorten links to a fixed length, and some count line breaks differently. This counter can't know those rules, so treat its number as a close guide:
- When you are near a limit, leave a few characters spare, especially if the text has emoji or links.
- Check the platform's own counter, if it has one, before you publish.
To trim quickly, look for double spaces, filler words and long URLs. The Words figure on the same panel tells you how much each cut changed.
Frequently asked questions
Does a space count as a character?+
Yes, in the main Characters total. Every space, tab and line break adds 1. The Chars (no spaces) figure is the one that leaves them out.
Why does my text count higher here than on a social app?+
Usually because of emoji. This counter adds 2 to 8 for each one, while many apps count an emoji as a single character. Accents stored as separate marks can also add 1 each without any visible difference.
Can I count characters in Chinese or Japanese text?+
Yes. Common characters in these scripts count as 1 each, so the Characters total is the useful figure. The word total isn't, because it splits only on spaces and treats a whole unspaced sentence as one word.
Do line breaks count toward the limit?+
They count as 1 each here. Whether a platform counts them depends on its own rules, so a message that sits right at the limit is worth testing there with and without the line break.
