Title Case Converter
Capitalize the first letter of each major word for headlines and titles, following common title-case rules.
What this converter actually does to each word
The rule is mechanical: the first letter of every word becomes a capital and every other letter in that word becomes lowercase. It doesn't keep short words in lowercase the way many headline style guides do, so of, the, a, at and to all get a capital too.
| You paste | You get |
|---|---|
| the lord of the rings | The Lord Of The Rings |
| HOW TO WRITE A COVER LETTER IN 2026 | How To Write A Cover Letter In 2026 |
| rock & roll | Rock & Roll |
That makes it a fast first pass, especially for ALL-CAPS headings, but most titles need a minute of hand editing afterwards.
Words that come out wrong
Because the rest of each word is forced to lowercase, anything with meaningful capitals inside it gets flattened:
- Acronyms:
NASAbecomesNasa,SEObecomesSeo. - Brand names:
iPhonebecomesIphone. - Surnames:
mcdonaldbecomesMcdonaldando'neilbecomesO'neil, since nothing after the first letter is capitalised. - Hyphenated words get one capital at the front only:
well-knownbecomesWell-known. Some styles wantWell-Known. - Words starting with a digit keep the digit first, so
3rdstays3rd.
Contractions with a curly or straight apostrophe come out fine: isn’t becomes Isn’t.
A known problem with accented first letters
The engine finds the start of a word using a pattern that only recognises the basic letters a to z, digits and the underscore. When a word starts with an accented letter, it skips that letter and capitalises the next one instead. élan vital comes out as éLan Vital, and ÜBER COOL as ÜBer Cool.
If your title has words starting with é, ü, ñ, ø or similar, check each of them and retype the first two letters by hand.
Cleaning up the result for a headline
A quick routine that gets most titles right:
- Paste the title and copy the result.
- Lowercase the short articles, conjunctions and prepositions in the middle (a, an, the, and, but, or, of, in, on, at, to), unless your style guide says otherwise. Keep the first and last word capitalised.
- Restore acronyms and brand names.
- Check any word that starts with an accent.
For headings where only the first word should be capitalised, the Sentence Case Converter is the better starting point.
Frequently asked questions
Does it follow AP or Chicago title case rules?+
No. It capitalises every word, including short ones, and lowercases the rest of each word. Use it as a starting point and then apply your style guide's rules for minor words by hand.
Why did my underscore_names only get one capital?+
The underscore counts as part of the word, so hello_world is treated as a single word and becomes Hello_world. Replace underscores with spaces first if you want each part capitalised.
Can I convert a whole list of titles at once?+
Yes. Put one title per line. Line breaks are kept, and each word on every line is converted, so the list comes back in the same order.
