Reverse List Order

Flip a list so the last line becomes the first.

Lines swap places, their contents don't change

The tool splits your text at every line break and writes the lines back in the opposite order. Nothing inside a line is touched: spacing, capitals, punctuation and emoji stay exactly as they were.

This is different from sorting Z to A. Sorting puts lines in alphabetical order, whatever order they started in. Reversing keeps your original sequence, just turned upside down, which is what you want for anything ordered by time or rank.

Typical jobs for a reversed list

  • Logs and histories: turn an oldest-first export into newest-first, or the other way round, before pasting it into a report.
  • Countdowns: write a top-ten from 1 to 10, then reverse it to reveal number 1 last.
  • Undo steps: list the steps you took to set something up, then reverse them to get the order for taking it apart.
  • Chat or comment threads copied in reverse order by an app, which you want to read from the start.

Blank lines, trailing line breaks and numbering

Every line counts, including empty ones, so a few things can surprise you:

  • Empty lines move with the list. A blank line between the first and second items ends up between the last two items.
  • A line break after the last item creates an empty last line, which becomes an empty first line after reversing. If the output starts with a gap, delete the trailing line break from your input, or remove empty lines first.
  • Numbers are part of the text. 1. first, 2. second, 3. third become 3. third, 2. second, 1. first. If you need the list renumbered from 1, strip the old numbers before reversing and add new ones afterwards.

Lists that aren't one item per line

The tool only recognises line breaks as separators. A comma-separated list such as red, green, blue is a single line, so it comes back unchanged. Put each item on its own line first, then reverse.

A paragraph that wraps onto several lines in the box is still one line if you didn't press Enter, so it stays in one piece. Lines copied from a spreadsheet column arrive one cell per line, which works directly.

Frequently asked questions

Does reversing a list sort it?+

No. The order is flipped, not alphabetised. If your list was random to start with, it stays random, just in the opposite order.

Can I reverse a list of thousands of lines?+

Yes. The work happens in your browser, and flipping line order is quick even for long lists. Very large pastes may take a moment to appear in the result box.

How do I reverse the letters inside each line as well?+

Use the reverse text tool. It reverses every character in the box, which also puts the last line first, so you get both effects in one step.
