Strikethrough Text Generator

Add a s̶t̶r̶i̶k̶e̶t̶h̶r̶o̶u̶g̶h̶ to any text using combining characters that work on every platform.

An overlay mark added after every character

Unlike the bold and italic generators, this one keeps your original letters. After each character it inserts U+0336, the combining long stroke overlay, a zero-width mark that draws a horizontal line through the character before it. Old price becomes O̶l̶d̶ ̶p̶r̶i̶c̶e̶.

Three details of how the engine does it:

  • Spaces are struck too, so the line runs across the gaps between words instead of stopping at each one.
  • Line breaks are left alone, so a two-line list stays on two lines, each with its own strike.
  • Everything else gets a stroke: digits, punctuation, currency signs, accented letters and emoji.

The text doubles in length

Every visible character now carries a second, hidden one. The “characters out” count under the box makes this easy to see: Old price is 9 characters in and 18 out. A two-line price note, Was $40 and Now $25, goes from 15 characters to 29, because the line break between them isn't doubled.

If you paste the result back in and run it again, each existing stroke gets a stroke of its own. Old price then reaches 36 characters and may look heavier or blurred. Start from your plain text each time.

How the line looks depends on the font

Combining marks are drawn by whatever font displays the text, and fonts handle them differently. In many the strokes join into one clean line. In others you may see a dashed line, a stroke that sits too high or too low, or gaps at narrow letters such as i and l.

Emoji are the weak spot. A stroke placed after an emoji such as ✅ may not draw through it. Worse, with emoji that are built from several parts, like a thumbs-up with a skin tone, the stroke lands between the parts and can split the emoji into two separate symbols. Keep emoji outside the part you strike through.

Where strikethrough helps and where it misleads

It reads well for a short visual joke, a corrected word in a caption, or an old price next to a new one in a post that doesn't allow formatting.

Don't rely on it to carry meaning. A screen reader may read the letters and ignore the strokes, so a listener hears the old price as if it were current. Search and copy-paste also see a mix of letters and marks, which can stop the word matching a search. Always state the change in plain words too, for example “now $25, was $40”.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove strikethrough from text I copied?+

Delete the U+0336 marks. The quickest way is to retype the words. Any find-and-replace tool that lets you paste the stroke character as the search term and replace it with nothing will also work.

Why is there a gap in my strikethrough line?+

Each character carries its own short stroke, and in some fonts those strokes don't quite meet at narrow letters or spaces. Changing the font, where the app allows it, is the only fix. The text itself is correct.

Can I strike through only one word?+

Yes. Paste just that word, copy the result, and put it back into your sentence. Converting the whole sentence would also strike the spaces and every other word.
