Convert gigabytes to megabytes instantly and accurately. 1 GB = 1000 MB. Type any value below β the result updates as you type.
How to convert gigabytes to megabytes
1 GB = 1000 MB. To convert gigabytes to megabytes, multiply the value by 1000.
Example: 10 GB Γ 1000 = 10000 MB.
Going the other way, 1 MB = 0.001 GB.

Estimating download time from GB and Mbps
Game and app stores often list sizes in GB, while internet plans quote speed in megabits per second. Convert the size to MB here first. In this converter 1 GB is 1,000 MB, so a 4 GB download is 4,000 MB.
- Turn megabytes into megabits by multiplying by 8: 4,000 MB Γ 8 = 32,000 Mb.
- Divide by your speed in Mbps: 32,000 Γ· 100 = 320 seconds.
- 320 seconds is 5 minutes 20 seconds. On a 50 Mbps line it doubles to 10 minutes 40 seconds.
Treat the result as a best case. Network overhead and the server's own speed mean real downloads take longer.
Splitting a data cap into daily amounts
If your plan gives you 50 GB a month, that's 50,000 MB. Spread over 30 days it comes to 1,666.67 MB a day. Comparing that with the per-app MB figures your phone shows tells you quickly whether you're on track.
Fractions of a gigabyte convert the same way: 1.5 GB is 1,500 MB and 0.5 GB is 500 MB.
When a GB should be 1,024 MB
Memory is the main place the binary convention is still the rule. RAM comes in power-of-two sizes, and virtual-machine settings often ask for memory in MB while meaning 1,024-based units. For those, pick Gibibytes in the From list and Mebibytes in the To list: 4 GiB is 4,096 MiB.
Converting the same 4 as decimal gigabytes gives 4,000 MB. Measured in bytes, 4 GiB is 4,294.97 decimal MB, so reading it as 4,000 would understate the memory by about 295 MB.
How many files fit on a card or stick
To estimate how many files of a given size a card holds, convert its capacity to MB and divide. A 16 GB memory card is 16,000 MB, so it takes about 640 files of 25 MB each.
Treat that as an upper bound. The card's usable space after formatting is a little less than its printed capacity, and if your file sizes came from a program counting in 1,024s, each file is slightly bigger than its label. Both effects cut the count, so expect somewhat fewer files than the division suggests.

Frequently asked questions
How many MB are in 1 GB?+
1,000 MB in this converter. Programs that count in 1,024s, and most RAM figures, use 1,024 MB per GB instead.
Is GB to MB a multiplication or a division?+
A multiplication. You're going from a larger unit to a smaller one, so you need more of them: multiply by 1,000. Going from MB to GB, you divide.
What is 0.5 GB in MB?+
0.5 GB is 500 MB in decimal units. Half a binary gibibyte is 512 MiB.
