This converter counts 1,000 MB to the gigabyte

Both units here use decimal prefixes. A megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes and a gigabyte is 1,000,000,000, so 1 GB = 1,000 MB. Converting is a matter of moving the decimal point three places to the left: 750 MB is 0.75 GB, 2,500 MB is 2.5 GB and 4,700 MB is 4.7 GB.

Plenty of software counts in steps of 1,024 instead, yet still writes MB and GB on screen. If your figure came from one of those programs, pick Mebibytes in the From list and Gibibytes in the To list. The same inputs then give different answers:

InputMB β†’ GB (Γ· 1,000)MiB β†’ GiB (Γ· 1,024)
1,0241.0241
2,5002.52.4414
4,7004.74.5898

Keeping track of a mobile data allowance

Phone settings and carrier apps often list each app's usage in MB, while the plan is sold in GB. Add up the app figures first, then convert the total. Say you've used 1,500 MB streaming and 750 MB on everything else: 2,250 MB is 2.25 GB, which leaves 2.75 GB of a 5 GB plan.

Your plan's terms say how the carrier counts. If it treats a gigabyte as 1,024 MB, the same 5 GB plan holds 5,120 of those megabytes rather than 5,000, a little more headroom than the decimal figure suggests.

The "700 MB" file that is really 734 MB

Suppose a file manager that counts in 1,024s lists a video as 700 MB. Its real size is 700 Γ— 1,048,576 = 734,003,200 bytes. Set this converter to Mebibytes β†’ Gigabytes and it reports 0.734 GB. Leave it on Megabytes and you get 0.7 GB, which understates the file by 4.86%.

That gap matters when you're close to a limit, such as a cloud upload cap or the free space on a memory card. When you can't tell which counting a program uses, assume the larger figure.

How many decimals to quote

The converter shows up to four decimal places, which for storage is more than you'll ever need. A file of 2,345 MB is 2.345 GB, and quoting it as 2.35 GB is precise enough for any download page or storage plan. Round up rather than down when the figure is going to be compared with a limit, so a rounding step never makes something look as if it fits when it doesn't.

How to use this tool

Frequently asked questions

How many MB are in 1 GB?+

In this converter, 1,000. In binary counting there are 1,024 MiB in a GiB, and programs that count that way often label both units plainly as MB and GB.

Is 1,024 MB equal to 1 GB?+

Only in binary counting. Here 1,024 MB converts to 1.024 GB. Choose Mebibytes and Gibibytes in the two lists and 1,024 converts to exactly 1.

What is 1 MB in GB?+

1 MB is 0.001 GB, one thousandth. Going the other way, 1 GB is 1,000 MB.

What is 500 MB in GB?+

500 MB is 0.5 GB, half a gigabyte. If the 500 is in mebibytes, it's 0.48828 GiB, or 0.52429 decimal GB.
