Gibibytes to Gigabytes Converter

Convert gibibytes to gigabytes instantly and accurately. 1 GiB = 1.0737 GB. Type any value below β€” the result updates as you type.

How to convert gibibytes to gigabytes

1 GiB = 1.0737 GB. To convert gibibytes to gigabytes, multiply the value by 1.0737.

Example: 10 GiB Γ— 1.0737 = 10.7374 GB.

Going the other way, 1 GB = 0.93132 GiB.

The gap grows with every prefix

A gibibyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes, 1,024 to the third power. A gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes. So 1 GiB = 1.0737 GB in this converter, and the binary unit is 7.37% bigger. Each step up the prefix ladder multiplies in another factor of 1.024, so the difference widens:

Binary unitBytesBigger than its decimal namesake by
KiB1,0242.40%
MiB1,048,5764.86%
GiB1,073,741,8247.37%
TiB1,099,511,627,7769.95%

Tebibytes aren't in the converter's list; the row is there to show where the trend goes.

Where you'll see GiB, labelled or not

  • RAM. Memory comes in power-of-two sizes, so a module sold as 16 GB holds 16 GiB, which is 17.1799 GB in decimal terms.
  • Linux tools. Commands such as df run with -h print sizes in powers of 1,024.
  • Cloud consoles. Some providers size virtual disks and memory in GiB and say so; check the label before comparing with a plan written in GB.
  • Windows. File Explorer divides by 1,024 but writes GB, so its GB figures are GiB in practice.

Add 7.4% in your head

Multiplying by 1.074 lands within 0.024% of the converter: 8 GiB becomes 8.592 GB against the true 8.5899. Multiplying by 1.07 is easier but 0.35% low.

Going from GB to GiB, multiply by 0.93132, or take off about 7%. A 512 GB drive is 476.84 GiB.

Because the gap is a fixed percentage, it adds up on large amounts. 1,024 GiB, a full binary tebibyte, converts to 1,099.51 GB, almost 100 GB more than the round number suggests.

Converting other binary sizes

The same lists cover the smaller binary units. Choose Mebibytes in the From list and Megabytes in the To list, and 512 MiB converts to 536.87 MB. Kibibytes to Kilobytes turns 64 KiB into 65.536 KB. Each pair follows the percentage in the table above, so you can sanity-check a result by eye.

Fractions work too: 1.5 GiB is 1.6106 GB.

Frequently asked questions

What is 1 GB in GiB?+

1 GB is 0.93132 GiB. Press the swap button above to convert in that direction.

How many MB is 1 GiB?+

1 GiB is 1,073.74 MB in decimal megabytes, or exactly 1,024 MiB in binary ones. Pick the unit you need in the To list.

Why does my 256 GB SSD show 238 GB?+

The drive holds 256 billion bytes. Your system divides by 1,073,741,824 instead of 1,000,000,000, which gives 238.42, and then labels it GB. The capacity is all there.

Does every computer show GiB but call it GB?+

No. Recent versions of macOS count storage in decimal units, so their GB match the GB in this converter. Windows File Explorer divides by 1,024 and still writes GB. On Linux it depends on the tool and its options.
