Kilobytes to Megabytes Converter

Convert kilobytes to megabytes instantly and accurately. 1 KB = 0.001 MB. Type any value below β€” the result updates as you type.

How to convert kilobytes to megabytes

1 KB = 0.001 MB. To convert kilobytes to megabytes, multiply the value by 0.001.

Example: 10 KB Γ— 0.001 = 0.01 MB.

Going the other way, 1 MB = 1000 KB.

Divide by 1,000 here, by 1,024 for KiB

This converter defines a kilobyte as 1,000 bytes and a megabyte as 1,000,000 bytes, so the conversion is a plain division by 1,000. 250 KB is 0.25 MB, 1,234 KB is 1.234 MB and 2,048 KB is 2.048 MB.

The binary pair works on 1,024 instead. Choose Kibibytes and Mebibytes in the lists and 2,048 KiB becomes exactly 2 MiB. Which pair you need depends on where your number came from, and the next section shows why that can decide whether an upload works.

Why a 1,980 KB file can fail a 2 MB upload limit

Windows File Explorer, for one, reports sizes in blocks of 1,024 bytes but labels them KB. A file it lists as 1,980 KB is 1,980 Γ— 1,024 = 2,027,520 bytes.

  • Against a limit of 2,000,000 bytes, a decimal 2 MB, the file is 27,520 bytes over. Pick Kibibytes in the From list and the converter shows 2.0275 MB.
  • Against a limit of 2 MiB, which is 2,097,152 bytes, it fits.
  • Typed in as plain kilobytes, it shows 1.98 MB. That looks safe, and isn't if the site's limit is decimal.

If an upload fails by a whisker, shrink the file a bit more than the numbers suggest rather than trimming it to the edge.

Photos, PDFs and email attachments

Phone photos, scanned pages and small PDFs often land in the hundreds of kilobytes, while attachment and form limits are given in MB. Total the files before converting: four images of 750 KB each come to 3,000 KB, or 3 MB.

Email adds a catch. Attachments travel in an encoded form that is larger than the original files, so a set of files that totals just under a mail server's limit can still be rejected. Leave a clear margin.

How to use this tool

  1. 1Enter the value in kilobytes.

Frequently asked questions

How many KB are in a MB?+

1,000 in this converter. In binary units there are 1,024 KiB in a MiB, and you can switch to those units in the From and To lists.

Should it be KB or kB?+

The metric prefix for a thousand is a lowercase k, as in km, so kB is the strict spelling for 1,000 bytes. KB with a capital K is common in software, where it often means 1,024 bytes. On this page, KB means 1,000 bytes.

What is 500 KB in MB?+

500 KB is 0.5 MB. If the 500 is in binary kibibytes, it is 512,000 bytes, which converts to 0.512 MB.

Why does the same file show different sizes on two devices?+

The devices count differently. One divides the byte count by 1,000,000 and the other by 1,048,576. A file of 2,027,520 bytes reads as about 2.03 MB on the first and 1.93 MB on the second, though nothing about the file has changed.
