Terabytes to Gigabytes Converter

A drive sold as 1 TB holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, and this converter turns that into exactly 1,000 GB. An operating system that divides by 1,073,741,824 (1,024 × 1,024 × 1,024) gets 931.32 from the same bytes and still labels the result GB. Nothing is missing; the bytes are being counted in a bigger unit.

If your drive shows a little less than the right-hand column, the remainder is usually space the file system reserves for itself. On a computer's internal drive, recovery partitions and the operating system take more on top. Compare what you see against the GiB figure, not against the number on the box, before deciding anything is wrong.

Cloud plans and backup services are often sold in TB, while the things you store are measured in GB. A 2 TB plan is 2,000 GB, enough for 500 files of 4 GB each, before any space the service keeps for older versions.

For a quick answer, multiply by 1,000: 0.5 TB is 500 GB, 12 TB is 12,000 GB. For the figure your computer will show, multiply by 931.32 instead, or switch the To unit to Gibibytes.

When drives are combined in a NAS or an external enclosure, add their labelled capacities first and convert once. Four 4 TB drives give 16 TB of raw space, which is 16,000 GB here and 14,901.16 on a system that counts in 1,024s.

Raw space isn't usable space if the drives protect each other. Mirroring, where every file is written to two drives, halves it: the same four drives as two mirrored pairs leave 8,000 GB for your files.
