From decimal stone to stones and pounds

The result comes out in decimal stone, but people say their weight as stones and pounds. Convert the leftover decimal by multiplying it by 14:

KilogramsConverterStones and pounds
70 kg11.0231 st11 st 0 lb (0.32 lb left)
80 kg12.5978 st12 st 8 lb (8.37 lb left)
95 kg14.9599 st14 st 13 lb (13.44 lb left)

Watch the top of the range. If the leftover rounds to 14 lb, it's really another whole stone: 13.6 lb rounds up to 14, which you'd write as the next stone and 0 lb, never as "14 st 14 lb".

Doing it in your head, and which shortcut to trust

The most reliable mental route goes through pounds. Multiply the kilograms by 2.2, then divide by 14 and keep the remainder. For 80 kg: 80 Γ— 2.2 = 176 lb, and 176 Γ· 14 is 12 with 8 left, so 12 st 8 lb. That matches the converter.

Dividing straight by a rounded number is riskier:

  • Γ· 6.35 is almost exact: 80 kg gives 12.598 st.
  • Γ· 6.5 is 2.3% low: 12.31 st, about 4 lb light at 80 kg.
  • Γ· 6 is 5.8% high: 13.33 st, over 10 lb heavy at 80 kg.

The Γ— 2.2 step is itself about 0.2% low, but at body weights that's well under a pound, so the remainder rarely changes.

Tracking a change in weight

If you weigh yourself in kilograms but think of goals in stone, convert the change, not just each reading. A 5 kg loss is 0.78737 st, or 11.02 lb, so just under 11 lb.

Going the other way, a scale that steps in tenths of a stone moves 1.4 lb, or 0.635 kg, per step. Small daily ups and downs in kilograms may not show up on it at all.

For a target, convert it once and write it down in both units, so you're not reconverting every week and picking up a different rounding each time.
